Great lakes boaters. Would a 'deck boat' (tri-hull, open bow) be suitable for the big lakes?

I'm boat shopping in SW MI right now and finding a lot of decent deals on 19 foot tri-hull deck boats. I live by a lot of nice inland lakes but am hoping to hit Lake Michigan occasionally. Are Deep Vs really the only way to go? I'm not talking about gale seas but would it be reasonable on a calm day? I don't see a lot of them out there.
